Sports & Social

Sports & Social:

The Constabulary had a thriving sports and social scene. A wide range of activities to suit all included football, rugby, cricket, tennis, squash, bowls, running, fishing and at one time, a tug-of-war team. The teams participated at a high level and won many trophies in their field. In the 80's a strong running team included the Chief Constable and Surrey also fielded strong football, rugby and cricket teams. Also to the fore was the Surrey Constabulary Motor Cycle Club which still carries the Constabulary name on today, (see the following page). The social scene was also very strong with police bars at the larger police stations where social events were organised for off duty officers and families. This encouraged a strong sense of community and included such things as Christmas parties for children of the Constabulary and farewell functions for retiring staff.
