CID @ WorkCID @ Work: Woodman Brothers. The Woodman Brothers who served the Surrey public for a total of 114yrs:Cliff was the first to become a S.O.C.O in the 1950s at Horley. In those days it was a uniform officer who did it on a part time basis. His mode of transport was his pedal cycle to which he strapped on a wooden box containing his equipment and off he would go and pedal to the scene. In those days we did have a blood and paint index, all the standard samples would be taken, glass paint wood fibres etc. Fingerprinting examination was done with Graphite for light surfaces and chalk for dark surfaces these were applied with a squirrel haired brush. When a print was found a photographer would attend from Mount Browne with his full plate camera to photograph the print and forward it to fingerprint department. Gordon Elerby and Geof Mynott gave training for fingerprint examination at Mount Browne.Forensic training was given at N.S.Y and explosive training was given at Woolwich and at Montgomery Lines in Bordon Hampshire.Ray joined S.O.C.O at Leatherhead in the mid 50s, having the same training as Cliff.Vic joined the S.O.C.O team in the mid 70s. S.O.C.O had come a long way by this time. We worked in plain clothes the cycles had gone and we drove around in Mini Vans, it now being a full time appointment.Vic had the same fingerprinting and explosive training as his brothers but attended the Detective Training School at Hendon for his forensic training, which had expanded considerably by now. The Metropolitan Laboratory at Lambeth examined all our forensic samples.By the time Vic had joined the team fingerprint examination had advanced considerably and they were now using a very fine aluminium powder, which was applied with a Zephyr Brush, which was made of very fine strands of fibreglass so the squirrels gave a sigh of relief. The fingerprint was then lifted onto a clear tape and mounted onto a vinyl sheet, which would be forwarded to Fingerprint Department for examination. This made the whole routine faster and more efficient.Don was the fourth brother; he remained a uniform beat officer at Haslemere for 22yrs. The later part of his service was on reception duty at Headquarters. With thanks to Vic Woodman.
