Cadets

Cadets:

In the mid 1950s police cadets came to Surrey. Until then, young men who joined had been called junior clerks or boy clerks. They had no proper training and were considered by most as general dogsbodies, starting with cleaning and polishing duties and progressing to minor administrative tasks, etc. This all changed in 1955 when a uniform was issued and formal training instituted, consisting of a month’s residential course at headquarters before a divisional posting. When the cadets who could join after 16 were old enough at 19 they had the opportunity to join the Force. The cadet arrangements were discontinued in 1981.

One of the first courses for Cadets was the idea of CC Joseph Simpson; for boys who had left school at 16 after GCEs. (School leaving age was 15 in those days.) Four weeks was spent at Mount Browne and also typing classes at Guildford Tech, life-saving, first aid and some police duties. Ten Surrey cadets were on the course which also included 6 cadets from the Royal Berkshire Constabulary and 1 from Reading Borough.
